JOHN NEWMAN Since 1991 John Newman has been the face of Incarnate Word tennis, both men’s and women’s. Over those now 20 years of coaching at the University his teams have rolled up a cumulative mark of 411-256-1. Those remarkable numbers break down almost in the middle as the men have won 202 matches while the UIW women have been victorious 209 times. In his UIW time, Newman has coached nine All-Americans and he has had two national championships. In 1993 he had a singles player win the NAIA national championship and then team up to capture the national title in doubles. Since the Cardinals moved to the NCAA Division II, one of his teams, either men or women or both, have advanced to the regional level in nine of 12 years. For his efforts, Newman twice was NAIA regional coach of the year and twice NCAA regional coach of the year. He was Heartland Conference coach of the year five times for women and once for men. And twice he was Heart of Texas coach of the year. All that is for coaching. As for playing, Newman has played in and won titles in every age bracket since he began competing in the Texas Sectionals at age 35. He has been the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation singles champion and he has been the Super Seniors singles champion. He has been ranked number one in the state of Texas in the 65 and over category. He has played in the US Open and on the United States and European circuits. Before coming to Incarnate Word, he was an assistant for both men and women at Trinity University, he was the men’s head coach at the University of Tennessee and was the head coach for both sides at Vanderbilt University. Newman is a native San Antonian. He played at Jefferson High School and was a member of the original Trinity men’s tennis team.
