Induction Class of 2014
Danny Kaspar coached his first UIW men’s basketball game on November 9, 1991, and the then-Crusaders. UIW won the first seven games on the way to a final 21-9 mark and Coach Kaspar was off and running, all the way to the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame, Class of 2014.
Between the fall of 1991 and the spring of 2000, nine years, his teams won 219 games, the most in UIW history. Those nine squads all won 20 or more games including a school record 28 twice. Over those nine years the Crusaders lost a measly 52 times and led by Kaspar posted a winning percentage of .808.
Kaspar’s teams won five conference championships. They went to the NAIA national championship tournament six times including 1998-1999 when UIW was ranked number one in the nation and seeded number one at the tournament. That team reached the quarterfinals and finished 28-2.
Along the way Kaspar was NAIA national coach of the year by BASKETBALL TIMES. Once he was NAIA district coach of the year and three times he was conference coach of the year. Under Kaspar’s tutelage 11 players were named All-America. And, four were voted All-American Scholar-Athletes.
