FRISCO, Texas -- A record 148 student-athletes from the University of the Incarnate Word winter and spring sports have earned spots on the 2018 Southland Conference Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll, the league released Tuesday.
"I'm very proud of our student-athletes for their academic accomplishments this year," said UIW Director of Athletics
Dr. Brian Wickstrom. "Our student-athletes have bought into UIW's mission, which includes education as one of its core values. These student-athletes hard for this honor, and we are excited they have been recognized by the conference office for their efforts."
The 148 student-athletes topped the university's previous high of 147 set in spring, 2016. Since UIW's debut in the Southland Conference in the 2013-14 season, the Cardinals have finished atop the spring commissioner's honor roll every season. In 2014-15, UIW had the most student-athletes acknowledged in both the fall and spring SLC honor roll standings, with a total number of 218 student-athletes recognized.
Twenty student-athletes achieved a 4.0 GPA in the spring semester, with the men's and women's track and field teams leading the department with more than half of the recipients. Earning perfect GPAs during the semester were:
Tyler Miller (baseball);
Quincy Baker and
Kandyce Shepard (women's basketball);
Diego Hernandez and
Kevin Smith (men's golf);
Madison Frerking (women's golf);
Victoria Bratcher (softball);
Maria Batchinsky and
Alejandra Tamayo (women's tennis);
Andrew Leuthner,
Wiley Saavedra, and
Chris Winski (men's track); and
Elizabeth Alvarado,
Myah Antwi,
Gabrielle Estrada,
Mahogani Frazier,
Madi Henry,
Kathleen Hoffman,
Emily Wilson, and
Claire Woodson (women's track).
Of those earning honor roll accolades, 15 were named academic all-conference, while two were the conference's student-athlete of the year and one was a Freshman All-American.
To be eligible for the commissioner's honor roll, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum of a 3.00 GPA or higher in the 2018 spring semester and have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during that same semester.
