Jonathan Camarena sealed the victory against Oral Roberts this weekend with a late goal and that is why he is this week’s male athlete of the week for August 31 to September 6. This will place Camerena on the list for male athlete of the year which will be voted on by the athletic administrators and UIW coaches at the end of the year.

The Cardinals opened the season at home against the ORU Eagles. In the first half,. Camarena started as a defender and help hold down the back line until he made a run midway through the first half that ended with his shot being blocked by the goalkeeper directly to Noah Keats, who slotted it home for the team's first goal.
Â
In the second half, Camarena moved into the midfield. He finished the game off when he put the team up 3-0 with less than 15 minutes to play. The ball was sent into the offensive third, where one-time touches by Dylan Kelly and Keats led to Camarena chipping the keeper for his first goal of the year.
Â
Camarena and the Cardinals will face the Oral Roberts Eagles again this week, but will travel this time to Tulsa, Ok. Camarena is from Juarez, Mexico and is now studying Spanish and a minor in kinesiology.
