MARCOS MORA
It was the first outdoor meet of the spring for Incarnate Word and Marcos Mora made the best of the event earning himself male athlete of the week honors for the timeframe March 10 to March 16.
Mora is now eligible to be named male athlete of the year at UIW when coaches and athletic administrators take a vote at the conclusion of the spring semester.
At the Islander Open hosted by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Mora entered two events and found success in both. In the shorter of his two races, the 1,500-meters, he won the first heat in a time of 4:11.68. That time stood up after all the heats were completed giving him a first place in his first race in the first meet outdoors.
His second race was the 3,000-meters. He finished fourth but his time of 8:57.99 established a new mark for Incarnate Word. Mora broke the previous mark of 8:59.24 set back in 2007 by Shane Weidner.
Mora is a junior from Wagner High School in Converse. He is studying business at Incarnate Word. As a sidebar to his victory in the 1,500, Marcos edged out his twin brother Mario who was second just 0.40 seconds behind.
