NERO AND DEFENSE TAKE HONOR
 
All zeros on his statistics line do not explain how James Nero came to be the male athlete of the week at Incarnate Word for the time slot October 7 to October 13.
 
Nero plays soccer for the Cardinals.  He plays defense where in most games there are no statistics to be kept unless you are the coach evaluating what happened on the pitch.
 
UIW was in Georgia to play Division I Mercer University.  The Cardinals came home with a victory.  Nero and his back line mates all but put a blank on the opponent.  Mercer for the match had a paltry seven shots total and but one of those attempts was on goal.  While that one was good, one shot will not win many contests.
 
Playing all 90 minutes, Nero was the key to the rock solid defense in the back for the Cardinals.  He now will be on the yearend ballot as UIW coaches and athletic administrators select the male athlete of the year.
 
Nero is a senior defender.  He is from Olympic High School in Charlotte, N.C.  At Incarnate Word he is studying biology.
