University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

During the timeframe January 27 to February 2 Natalie Hessong proved once again she can shoot the basketball.  Consequently she is the Incarnate Word female athlete of the week and later in the spring will be on the ballot when UIW coaches and athletic administrators will select a female athlete of the year.

In one of two games last week for the basketball Cardinals she was seven out of 10 from the field and that included being 7-9 on three-pointers.  Those seven made were the second most in UIW history for a single game.  She finished with a team high 23 points.  While the Cardinals lost the game at Northeastern State she personally scored 14 points in the final five minutes to get UIW within range for a victory.

Back in November Hessong made 8 of 13 three’s in a win and those eight tied a school record, all-time.  She now has been in 18 of the 20 games played to date and seven times she has made three or more from long-range.  She is leading the team shooting .416 from beyond the arc for the year.

Hessong is a 5-9 freshman guard out of Corpus Christi King High School.  She is studying mathematics at UIW.
