PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team exploded for 14 runs and 16 hits in their 14-4 victory over Prairie View A&M Tuesday at Tankersley Field.
The Cardinals (2-2) scored two early runs in the first inning with one RBI from both
Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) and
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS). The lead would not last long. The Panthers (0-4) answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning with a Connor Wrye grand slam to take a 4-2 lead.
UIW's pitching staff would then shut down the Panthers offense for the rest of the game.
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) started the game for the Cardinals, and after giving up the grand slam in the first, he settled down and pitched three scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked one. The bullpen then combined to throw the last five innings, giving up no runs and only one hit.
Chris Jones (Halletsville/Halletsvile HS),
Trevor Hardee (Alvord/Alvord HS),
Adam Hunter (Yoakum/Yoakum HS) and
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) all pitched at least one inning and Hardee earned the win, striking out three in an inning and two thirds of work in relief.
With the pitching staff holding the Panthers to four runs, the Cardinals offense took care of the rest. Hoover led the way with three hits, two runs and an RBI, while
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS), Hoffman and
William Triebes (Pflugerville/Hendrickson HS) all collected two hits apiece. Triebes did not enter the game until the sixth inning, but still got two hits and three RBI's in two at bats. Divelbiss' two hits were both doubles.
Dustin Cole (Tomball/Tomball HS) and
Aaron Warren (Schertz/Warren HS) both came in to pinch hit and collected a single each.
Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) continued his hot start to the season getting on base three times via a single and two walks, scored two runs and also stole a base in the win.
Michael Dewey took the loss for the Panthers, giving up seven runs (five earned) and eight hits in 4.1 innings.
As a team, the Cardinals collected 16 hits, two extra base hits, a stolen base and committed two errors. The Panthers only had four hits while committing seven errors.
The Cardinals are back in San Antonio for the Irish Alamo Invitational at Wolff Stadium starting Thursday and going through Sunday. The Cardinals' first matchup comes against the Fighting Irish on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
