University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

EVANDRO SILVA
 
The University of Texas Invitational swimming meet was loaded with top-of-the-line athletes from across the nation and Incarnate Word’s Evandro Silva made his name known.  Thus he is the UIW male athlete of the week for December 3 to December 8.
 
He was entered in four individual events and he was on four UIW relay teams.  In the relays, the Cardinals had three top eight finishes and one ninth place team.  In the 200-freestyle relay event he led off and posted an Incarnate Word school record 20.24 for his 50 yards.  The team finished ninth.  He came back later to leadoff the 8^th place 800-free team.
 
His other relays were anchor legs in the 200-medley (7^th) and the 400-medley (8^th).
 
Individually his best showing was in the 200-IM where he finished sixth.  In the preliminaries of this event he posted a 1:47.42 which is a “B” cut meaning he is on the provisional list for next spring’s Division I national championships.
 
He was 10^th in the 100-breaststroke, 13^th in the 200-butterfly and 19^th in the 400-IM.
 
Silva is a sophomore from Guaruja, Brazil, and he is studying engineering management at UIW.  He will be eligible for male athlete of the year next spring when Cardinals coaches and athletic administrators made that choice.
