DENZEL LIVINGSTON
Denzel Livingston has this male athlete of the week thing figured out as for the third consecutive seven-day period he is just that at Incarnate Word. And it is his fourth time this season. Yes, he will be on the yearend ballot when Cardinals coaches and athletic administrators select a male athlete of the year.
From February 3 to February 9 the basketball Cardinals were 2-0 in Southland Conference play. In those games Livingston was asked to do it all, even to the point that he jumped center to begin overtime against Houston Baptist and he won the tip.
In the HBU extra period affair, he had a career high 36 points as he scored 24 of those in the last 10 minutes of the second half and five minutes of overtime. The UIW team had 37 in those 15 minutes meaning Livingston accounted for 65 percent of the Cardinals output.
His personal highlight video included a layup which sent the contest to extra time at 74-all. In OT he had eight points on 6-6 at the free throw line and a resounding, backboard-shaking dunk. And, his team high 11 rebounds gave him his fourth double-double of the year.
Then, those 36 points give him 1,010 for his now two-plus years career and put him in 14th position on the all-time UIW scoring list.
In the two-game week he averaged 28.0 points while shooting .469 (15-32) from the field including 3-10 (.300) on three’s. He also was 23-29 at the stripe for .793 while averaging 8.0 rebounds, an assist, 2.0 blocks and 2.5 steals.
Livingston is a junior guard from Houston’s Waltrip High School. He is a business major at Incarnate Word.
