SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team say farewell to nine seniors, in their second and final home game of the season.
This Sunday night at 6 p.m., the Cardinals host Grand Canyon University in only their second and last home game of the season. The match up will be the Cardinals penultimate game before the season closes. It will also mark the celebration of Senior Night.
For UIW a total of 10 seniors will be honored before the game, a number that will undoubtedly leave a large gap to be filled for the Cardinals next season. Starting midfield duo
Vinny Bailey and
Robin Nicholls, midfielders
Placide Buduri and
Jerrod Odette, goalkeeper
Jarred Kahan and defenders
Tenny Adebowale,
Uros Ceglaj,
Wylie Rea,
James Nero and
Josh Ferona will be exhausting their eligibility this year.
Adebowale, Bailey, Odette, Kahan, Nero and Ferona are each four year members of the program. They have gone 48-14-8 in their careers with two NCAA Division II playoff appearances, a Lone Star Conference Championship and an NCAA Division II South Central Region title.
Ceglaj, Nicholls, Rea and Buduri each joined the Cardinals at the beginning of the 2012 season that saw the Cardinals go into the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II playoffs and have each become pivotal members of the team.
The match up this weekend will see the Cardinals welcome back previous Division II rivals the Grand Canyon Antelopes (3-12-1). In the 2012 season both the Cardinals and the Antelopes were ranked in the top ten in the NCAA Division II, but it was the Cardinals that advanced the furthest after they made it to the Elite Eight.
This year both teams have embarked on their debut season as a Division I side. The Antelopes have been outscored by their opponents, 17-30 and hold a scoring average of 1.07 against the Cardinals 1.96 goals per game.
Joshua Zehring is their starting goal keeper and holds a 1.96 goals against average after making a total of 51 saves.
The Cardinals close their season on the road next week against the University of Nebraska at Omaha on Saturday at 1 p.m.
