HOUSTON -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team (1-5-1) came up short against Houston Christian (2-4-2), falling 2-1 Saturday night in its conference opener.
The game remained scoreless through the opening half, with Houston Christian holding a 5-to-2 advantage in shots. UIW recorded its first shot in the 14th minute from Knox Hicks, while Evan Kraenzel added another opportunity in the 31st minute.
With a minute remaining in the half, the Huskies put a shot on frame, forcing Victor Salmeron to make his first save of the night to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, converting it to take a 1-0 lead. Reagan Gyedu took UIW's first shot on goal in the 64th minute, but was unable to find the back of the net. Three minutes later, the Huskies notched another goal to extend their lead to 2-0.
The Cardinals continued to battle, cutting the deficit in half in the 72nd minute. Juan Monrreal scored his first career goal off an assist from Kraenzel, bringing UIW within one.
Aarush Kamath had the final opportunity for UIW in the closing seconds, but was unable to find the equalizer.
The Cardinals continue conference play on Oct. 1, traveling to face Lindenwood at 7 p.m.
