GENO ENCINA

Geno Encina took to the mound for the baseball Cardinals against Hofstra University and gave his team exactly what they needed.  As a result he is the male athlete of the week at Incarnate Word for the time March 3 to March 9.

The Cardinals had lost four of their previous five games and needed a boost in game one of the four-contest set against the club out of New York City.  Encina was up to the task.

He went eight innings allowing just a single run on only four hits.  In the meantime his teammates plated a pair, enough for Encina to pick up his second victory of the year.  Along the way he struck out six Hofstra batters and walked none.  He threw 101 pitches over his eight innings including 75 strikes which is a good ration of 3 to 1.

Encina is a sophomore righthander from San Antonio’s Brandeis High School.  He is studying journalism.  He now will be on the ballot at year’s end as UIW coaches and athletic administrators name a male athlete of the year.
