UIW Track Competes at Texas Tech Classic & Multis.

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word track and field teams are prepared to send a large contingent of competitors to the Texas Tech Classic & Multis this weekend. The meet will take place at the Sports Performance Center on Friday and Saturday.  
 
OPENING BLOCKS
 
Last Weekend standout performer, Sarea Alexander, broke her school record in the women's long jump. In the matter of one week, Alexander went from being 54th in the nation to her current 16th ranking. She and teammates Dominique Allen and Jamarkese Williams earned Honorable Mention honors in this week's Southland awards.
 
The Cardinals will compete alongside athletes from Abilene Christian, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Oklahoma, Sam Houston, Texas, Texas Tech, UTA and UTEP. 
 
The men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon will both begin competition on Friday. The men will kick off the meet with the 60m at 10:00 a.m., and the women's 60H will follow at 10:20 a.m. Athletes competing in the 'B section' of the women's pole vault will compete at 7:30 p.m.
 
Women and Men's shot put (B section) will open the meet on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Action will begin on the track at noon with the Olympic development section of the women's 60m. The preliminary round of the 60m open is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. The men's 4x400m relay will conclude the meet at 4:10 p.m.
 
THE LAST LAP
 
Emily Davila will be back in action since her record breaking performance at the Ted Nelson Invitational. The freshman cleared 3.42m/11-2.5 to shatter the Cardinal record set in 2005 by Maria Ferrand. Zara Amechi, Madison Miles and Amiah Parson will have their big debuts in the pentathlon.
 
On the men's side, Andrew Leuthner will appear in the 60m, 200m and long jump. Jamari Gilbert looks for another week of improvement in the 400m, and will also compete in 200m and 4x400 relay.
 
 
COMING UP
 
The Cardinals will rest next weekend before their final tune-up before conference at the Howie Ryan Invitational. The meet will take place at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Feb. 9-10.
 
STAY TUNED
 
UIW Track will face Southland competition at the indoor conference championships. The big show will take place in Birmingham, Alabama on Feb. 21-22.
