The Incarnate Word men's track and field team had strong showings at both the Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational.
Over in Austin at the Texas Relays,
Tommaso Franze finished 8th in the decathlon, moving up one spot from where he ended yesterday. Over the final five events of the decathlon, Franze posted a pair of 11th-place finishes, those coming in the 110-meter hurdles and discus throw, a pair of 5th-place finishes, in pole vault and javelin, and a 6th-place finish in the 1,500-meter run.
Gabriel Grebet had moved up to fourth after placing second in the 110-meter hurdles, but he ended up not finishing the rest of the decathlon. A similar result occurred for
Mika Funck, who had finished third in both the discus throw and pole vault to move into 7th in the event, but he did not compete in the final two events, withdrawing from the decathlon.
Then, with the individual events underway, the Cardinals had four top five finishes including one podium-topping effort by
Christian Castro-Cruz in the 10,000-meter run.
Castro-Cruz completed the 10,000-meter run in 30:33.66 to win the event by over 11 seconds. Incarnate Word had two runners in the top five of the 1,500-meter run, with
Anthony Zapata finishing fourth and
Ethan Malesich finishing 1.5 seconds behind Zapata to finish fifth.
James Butler posted a time of 9:18.95 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish fifth in the event.
In San Marcos at the Bobcat Invitational, the Cardinals have
Cody Schmedding sitting in seventh in the decathlon through the first five events and an eighth-place finish by
Gibson Conard in the discus throw.
The Cardinals continue both the Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational on Friday, April 3rd with events throughout the day.
