Zapata Sets School Record, Track and Field Has Strong Showing at Texas State Classic

The Incarnate Word men's track and field team walked away from this weekend's Charles Austin Classic at Texas State with a pair of first-place finishes, another handful of podium placements, and even more personal bests.

Notable Results:
  • Anthony Zapata's personal-best 1:50.56 not only won the 800-meter run, but it set a new Incarnate Word record in the distance.
  • Christian Castro-Cruz won the 1,500-meter event with a personal-best 3:50.73.
  • Jake Grullon came in second in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 53.21 seconds.
  • Ethan Malesich took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing the course in a time of 9:07.99, with Eric Pineda coming in third behind him with a personal-best 9:15.31.
  • Jonah Ulbricht placed second in the pole vault, clearing 5.10 meters, a new personal-best for the senior.
  • Alex Brown finished third in the hammer throw with his best attempt traveling 56.32 meters.
  • Devin Gills took the bronze in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 21.49 seconds.
  • The men's 4x100 meter relay team of Moreno, Toney, Robinson and Gills closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the event, with a time of 40.92 seconds.
The Cardinals head to Austin, TX next week for the Texas Relays, which run from Wednesday, April 1st through Saturday, April 4th.
