The Incarnate Word Men's Track and Field team placed third at the 2026 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, finishing with 117 points.
It was a busy final day of events for the Cardinals, with scorers coming through to keep Incarnate Word in contention for most of the day. In total, UIW had three podium finishes, including one event win, and 13 scorers on the day.
Anthony Zapata took the gold in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:48.34. Fellow Cardinal,
Ethan Malesich finished closely behind him, in 3:48.73, to claim the silver as UIW went 1-2 in the 1,500 meters event.
Incarnate Word had another back-to-back finish in the pole vault with
Jonah Ulbricht and
Austin Davisson finishing third and fourth, respectively. Ulbricht tied for the second-highest height cleared at 5.12 meters and placed third due to tiebreakers. Davisson cleared 5.02 meters and took fourth.
The 800 meters saw three Cardinals score as Zapata, Malesich, and
Jared Laverty went 5-6-7 with times of 1:52.22, 1:52.85, and 1:53.24, respectively, to add to UIW's team total.
The 4x100 meter relay team of
Ocean Moreno,
Benjamin Toney,
Ahmir Robinson, and
Devin Gills gave Incarnate Word another fourth-place finish with time of 40.62 seconds. And then later in the day, the 4x400 meter relay team of
Jake Grullon,
Taye Jackson,
Christopher Harris, and
Ahmir Robinson took sixth with a time of 3:13.21.
Gills and Grullon both had seventh-place finishes in their individual events, Gills running 10.37 seconds in the 100-meter dash and Grullon posting a 52.96-second time in the 400-meter hurdles. And
Alex Brown and
Christian Castro-Cruz tacked on another pair of seventh place finishes to close out the day's scoring. Brown took seventh in discus with a distance of 50.12 meters and Castro-Cruz ran the 5,000 meters in 14.39.45.
The Cardinals will see if any athletes are selected to compete at the NCAA West Regionals which are set for May 27th to 30th in Fayetteville, AR.
