OMAHA, NEBRASKA – A two-out RBI single by Cole Patterson in the bottom of the 10th inning ended the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team's season on Saturday. The Mavericks won 6-5 at the Ballpark at Boys Town in the final game of the season for both teams.
The game went back-and-forth with each team holding late leads. The Mavs (21-31) scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Cardinals (21-33) responded in the top of the second inning when
Colton Besett (Cedar Park/Vista Ridge HS) drove in two with a single. Omaha went up 3-2 in the bottom of the inning and then UIW tied the score again in the third inning.
The score remained that way until the top of the seventh inning. With two outs,
Aaron Warren (Schertz/Wagner HS) singled and stole second for the Cardinals. He went to third on an error and then scored when the Mavs committed another error.
Omaha tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Ryan Cate doubled home a run. They would take the lead on Adam Caniglia's sacrifice fly. The Cardinals were able to send the game to extra innings when
Dustin Cole (Tomball/Tomball HS) doubled to lead off the top of the ninth and then scored on
Austin Hoffman's (Goodyear, AZ/Colleyville Heritage HS) sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals were unable to score in the top of the 10th inning and that set the stage for Patterson to win the game for the Mavs.
Junior
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) tossed eight innings for the Cardinals and took a no-decision. He allowed nine hits, five runs and a walk while striking out five.
Trevor Hardee (Alvord/Alvord HS) was tagged with the loss. Zach Williamsen started for the Mavs. He went 7.0 innings allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Shane Meltz pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.
The Cardinals finished the game with 10 hits led by senior
Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) who closed out his career with a four-hit performance. Warren had another big game with two hits, three stolen bases and two runs scored.
The Mavericks finished the game with 12 hits. Cole Gruber went 3-for-5 at the plate while Cate, Justin Threlkeld and Patterson each had two hits.
