Cardinals and Lumberjacks Split a Pair

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) pitched into the ninth inning of the first game of the doubleheader against Southland Conference opponent Stephen F. Austin, to give the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team a 6-2 win, but they would later drop the second game, 19-2 on Saturday at Sullivan Field.

Encina finished with 8.1 innings of work, scattering six hits, two runs (one earned), walking one and striking out five. He came two outs away from throwing his first complete game of the season, but after giving up back-to-back triples in the ninth, Matthew Decker (Hickory Creek/Lake Dallas HS) came in to retire the next two outs for the Cardinals (12-25, 3-14 SLC) win.
SFA (13-26, 7-12 SLC) opened up the scoring in the top of the fourth with an unearned run, but would not score again until the ninth inning when the game was out of hand for the Lumberjacks. The Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-out double from Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) that brought in two runs. He finished the game with three hits and two RBI's.

UIW scored an unearned run in the seventh inning when Colton Besett (Cedar Park/Vista Ridge HS) scored after a Whitehead single and a throwing error by SFA's second baseman.  Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) then hit a two-run double in the eighth to give the Cardinals some insurance runs and make it 6-1.

Besett collected three hits, scored a run and hit in a run. Blake Woosley (Corvallis, OR/Philomath HS) was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored a run. As a team, the Cardinals collected 12 hits and committed two errors.

Dan O'Neill was the only SFA player with two hits, and Kyle Thornell collected the lone RBI for the visiting team. Cameron Gann went 7.2 innings and took the loss after allowing 12 hits, six runs (three earned), no walks and four strikeouts.

Encina earned the win for the Cardinals improving to 2-3 and lowering his ERA to 2.70 on the season. The win snapped UIW's eight-game losing streak.

After only scoring two runs on six hits in the first game, the Lumberjacks' offense exploded for 19 runs and 20 hits in game two of the doubleheader.  Seven Lumberjack hitters had at least two hits in game two and every offensive starter collected an RBI. Thornell led the way with a 3-for-3 game, including a home run, five RBI's and a walk. Matthew Dickey also collected three hits, added an RBI and scored four runs.

Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) collected three hits, a walk and an RBI for the Cardinals.  Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) finished 2-for-5 and Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) hit his second home run of the season in the sixth inning.

Dillon Mangham earned the win for the Lumberjacks hurling seven innings of two run baseball. He allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out five. Garret Cooper started on the mound for the Cardinals and fell to 4-5 on the season after taking the loss.

The series will be determined in the rubber match Sunday at 1:00 PM at Sullivan Field.
