Baseball Clips Wildcats

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Garret Cooper (Round Rock/McNeil HS) pitched eight innings of one run baseball to lead the Cardinals to a 8-1 win over Northwestern University on Friday night at Wolff Stadium in the Irish Alamo Invitational.

Cooper scattered nine hits, three walks and one earned run while striking out three in his second win of the season. He pitched seven innings in his win against Northeastern last weekend.

The Cardinals' (3-3) biggest inning offensively was the third inning when they scored four runs. After the first two Cardinal hitters were retired, Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) worked a two-out walk and Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millennium HS) then hit a single to center field to bring in Morris.  Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) brought in two runs with a double down the left field line and Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City/Yuba City HS) capped the two out rally with an RBI single through the left side.

Hoover, McGill and Will Triebes (Pflugerville/Hendrickson HS) all collected two hits apiece while McGill, Hoffman and Morris brought in two runs each. Leadoff hitter, Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) did his job well by getting on base four times in five plate appearances. He got a hit, walked twice and scored two runs for UIW.

R.J. Watters collected the only RBI for the Wildcats (0-5) with a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning. Reid Hunter had a good night for Northwestern with two hits, a run and a walk while Zach Jones added two hits and walk.

Reed Mason went five innings for the Wildcats and took the loss on the mound. Justin Yoss finished the game with three innings of work and giving up only one run.
Trevor Hardee (Alvord/Alvord HS) came in to relief Cooper in the ninth and completed a perfect inning with a strikeout and needed only nine pitches to retire the side.

The Cardinals will continue the Irish Alamo Invitational on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. against Villanova at Wolff Stadium.
