Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word scored three times in the first inning, but could not make the lead stand in a 6-4 loss to visiting Central Michigan University on Friday night in baseball action on Sullivan Field.
After getting shutout on Thursday, the Cardinals (5-13) wasted no time putting runs on the board.
Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) scored
Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) with a single and then
Jonathan Armijo (San Antonio/Marion Military) came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to cap off the inning.
UIW starting pitcher
Dylan Boss (Boerne/Boerne HS) cruised through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. After striking out the leadoff batter, he allowed a double, walk, walk, double and single with the final tally being four runs for the Chippewas (9-9). Cody Leichman's single gave the visitors the lead for good.
CMU added two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Leichman, but the Cardinals rallied in the bottom half of the inning. Whitehead slashed a one-out triple and scored on
Jason Stone's (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) ground out.
The last quality change for the Cardinals to score came in the eighth inning.
Colton Besett (Cedar Park/Navarro College) singled with two outs and was followed by a single by Armijo, but Armijo was thrown out at second on a bang-bang play trying to stretch it to a double.
The Cardinals had 10 hits in the game as Whitehead, Brown and Armijo each had two apiece. Whitehead scored twice while Armijo had two RBI's. Boss fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss. He struck out five in 4.1 innings.
Chris Jones (Hallettsville/Hallettsville HS) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. The team turned four double plays on defense.
"We hit the ball better tonight," said UIW head coach Dan Heep. "We just can't seem to get the one to put us over the top. We made two bad pitches and it seems like every time we make a mistake it bites us."
Pat Kaminska improved to 3-1 for CMU with 6.1 innings of work. He allowed eight hits and one earned run while striking out five. Tim Black picked up the save with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The teams are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
