SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting Stephen F. Austin University in Southland Conference action this afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H.E.B. The Cardinals fall to 18-28 and 8-20 in the conference, while the Lumberjacks improve to 26-24 and 14-14 in the SLC.
The Cardinals in the bottom of the second pushed a pair of runs across on two hits. It started when
Cole Tabor singled open the inning, but SFA got two outs quickly.
Drake Anderson kept the inning going when he walked on four straight pitches to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance 90 feet.
Kevin Ramos' two-run single scored both runners and put UIW up 2-0 before a flyout to center ended the inning.
SFA in the top of the fourth cut led to one on a passed ball, but then back-to-back RBI singles gave the Lumberjacks a 3-2 lead.
The Lumberjacks went on to add another run in the top of the fifth off an RBI fielder's choice to the shortstop to push their lead to 4-2.
UIW in its half of the fifth threatened when
Preston Newberry led off the inning with a single. Following a strikeout,
Christian Enriquez walked to put runners on first and second, but a double play ended the Cardinals' threat.
The Cardinals had runners on in both the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to score.
SFA in the ninth, set UIW down in order to end the game and take game one of the series.
Starting pitcher
Zac Colletti took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over four innings of work, while striking out three.
Newberry, Enriquez, and Tabor all tallied two hits each. One of Tabor's hits was a double. He also scored a run.
Ramos finished the game going 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while teammate
Jake Weaver also tallied a hit.
UIW looks to even the series against SFA tomorrow at 2 p.m.
