CARDINALS TOP MUSTANGS

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team showed plenty of fight in their win at Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State on Thursday night.  After dropping the first set, 25-18 they came back to win the final three sets 25-20, 28-26, 25-22. (Box Score

The Cardinals (4-7, 1-2) picked up their first conference victory of the season and kept the Mustangs (2-9, 0-3) winless in LSC play.  The key part of the match came in the third set when the Mustangs led 20-17.  The Cardinals tied the set at 22-22 after a 5-2 run.  The Cardinals were able to take control of the set as Chetina Chavis (Houston/Bush HS) pounded a pair of kills to give the team two set points.  UIW had four sets points before they were finally able to put the set away when Baleigh Schaetter (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg HS) and Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) combined on a block.

The Cardinals finished the match with 61 kills, 85 digs and a .227 attack.  Chavis led the attack with a season high 14 kills on a .423 attack while contributing a pair of blocks.  Kelci Lind (Lindale/Lindale HS) registered a double-double with 12 kills, 15 digs and a .367 attack and setter Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian Prep) dished out 26 assists with 20 digs.

The Cardinals received contributions up and down the roster.  Sarah Cardenas (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) had 23 assists and eight digs while libero Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) added 19 digs.  Beth Soukup (Helotes/O'Connor HS) narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 15 digs.

The Mustangs had 58 kills, 82 digs and a .237 attack.  Beatriz Villalba, Caitlin Wallace and Kasey Decker combined for 35 kills and each had an attack percentage of at least .385.  Courtney Haney and Kristan Aduddell dished out 24 and 21 assists, respectively.  Casey Fletcher led all players with 23 digs on the night.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at LSC rival Cameron.
