HOUSTON, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word women's swimming and diving team took fourth place in their first meet of the season with an impressive performance at the Rice Invitational on Saturday. (

The final scores after both days ended with quite a surprise when TCU barely pulled away for the win with a total of 1045 points. Rice came within a fraction of beating TCU, finishing with 1039 total points in the meet. Third place went to University of Houston with 654 points. UIW finished a close fourth with 632 points.
The most impressive swim of the meet for the Cardinal's was the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Tamiris Nascimento (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Salesianos),
Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine/National Pedagogical) and
Adrienne Morrow (Hot Springs, AR/Hot Springs HS) pulled together as a team to grab a first place finish in the relay with a time of 1:37.17 and an NCAA “B” cut in the event.
Nascimento had another great swim in her 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.21 and first place finish. It was her second first place finish of the meet joining her win in the 50-yard freestyle on Friday. In addition, her time was fast enough to secure an NCAA “B” cut in the event.
Overall, the Cardinals had a strong meet with some fast times and strong finishes despite putting in a hard work of training. The next event on the Cardinals' schedule is the annual Red vs. Black meet. This meet splits the team into two squads to compete for the win at the UIW Natatorium. Moreover, this is event will stand as the first alumni reunion for the retired Cardinals swimmers. Red vs. Black will take place on November 9
th at 6 p.m.
