LANA NGUYEN
The time frame December 16 to January 5 covered three weeks over the holidays. In that span swimmer Lana Nguyen and her Cardinals teammates were in two meets and she earned female athlete of the week(s) based on performance and sheer effort.
It started for Nguyen with the UIW Invitational in December. At that event she was in nine, count’em, nine races. She swam third on the winning 200-medley relay team. She was on four other relay teams which posted four second place finishes (200, 400 and 800-freestyle, and the 400-medley). Around those relays, individually, she swam second in the 50-freestyle, third in 100-free and fourth in the 100-breaststroke. And, she touched third in the 200-IM.
Then, in January the Cardinals were in San Diego for a three-way with San Jose State, and host California-San Diego.
At that meet Nguyen swam in but five events with her highlights being third place touches in the 500-freestyle and a leadoff leg on the 200-freestyle relay team. She had seventh place finishes in the 100-free and the 400-medley relay where she swam third. Her other finish was 10th in the 200-free.
Nguyen is a junior from Kiev, Ukraine. At Incarnate Word she is studying interior design. She now will be on the ballot at year’s end when Cardinals coaches and athletic administrators select a female athlete of the year.
