Katie Novak is the Incarnate Word female athlete of the week after she took the wind out of the opponent’s sails in the season opener for the Cardinal basketball team.
 
The Cardinals had a 13-point margin shrink to just four in the second half against traditional power Wayland Baptist.  The clock read 2:19 remaining when Novak put matters onto her right shooting arm.
 
She drained a three-pointer at 2:13.  A quick change of possession and she hit another trey with 1:56 to go and the Cardinals were back up by 10 in a period of just 17 seconds.  Ultimately UIW would win by eight.
 
Novak finished the contest with 13 points on 4-8 from the field including 4-7 on three-pointers.  She was 1-2 at the free throw line.  She also contributed twos in the categories of rebounds, assists and steals.
 
She is a senior from Homer Glen, Ill., Lockport Township High School.  She is pursuing a master’s degree at UIW in sports management.
 
She is now eligible for female athlete of the year as voted by Incarnate Word coaches and athletic administrators.
