University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

This week’s UIW Female Athlete of the Week is Daria Makieieva.  Her strength in the pool helped the Cardinals defeat Ouachita Baptist University in a dual meet last Thursday.  She can now be selected to be this year’s UIW Female Athlete of the Year, which will be voted on by the UIW coaches and the Sports Administration at the end of the school year.

Makieieva was one of four Cardinals who won two individual events.  She dominated the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.17, with a five second gap ahead of second place. Daria also finished with a good lead in the 200 breaststroke with a time 2:22.04.  She swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay that finished first with a 1:51.34 time.  Finally, she swam on the UIW ‘B’ team for the 200 freestyle relay, but still swam the fastest split time of anyone in the race.

Makieieva is a junior international business major from Mariupol, Ukraine.
