University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

University of the Incarnate Word junior  Shaina Garza was one of the main weapons for the Cardinals Volleyball team this weekend at the UT Rio Grande Valley Tournament. Her efforts earned her the nomination for this week’s female athlete of the week for the week of September 7 to September 13. This will place Garza in the running for Athlete of the Year, which will be voted on by the UIW coaches and the Athletic Administrators.

Garza killed the opposing teams this weekend with her kills and digs.  Against UTRGV, Garza showed her defensive strength with 14 digs. In the match against Southern, Garza tied her kills record from last season with 15 and also contributed with three assists and ten digs while posting a 652 attack.  In the match against San Jose State, she finished with a team high14 kills from 33 total attacks.  She was named to the UTRGV All-Tournament Team for her efforts.

The Cardinals will be traveling to New Orleans, LA this coming up weekend for the Allstate SugarBowl Collegiate Classic. They will face Tulane University at 11:30 AM on Friday and then play against Texas Christian at 4:30 PM. They will play their last game of the tournament against North Carolina State on Saturday at 4:30 PM.
