ALONA KYSELOVA
It was a big-time Division I swimming and diving meet, the University of Notre Dame Shamrock Invitational, and Alona Kyselova was Incarnate Word’s leader. She is the UIW female athlete of the week for January 26 to February 1. This is the second time this year for the honor to go her way.
She was in four individual events and in three relay races. She had a first place finish, two seconds, a third, a fifth, a sixth and a 10th.
Individually, Kyselova won the 400-IM in a time of 4:16.11. She was second in the 200-IM in 2:02.29 and she touched second in the 1,650-freestyle in 16:47.72. And, for fun, she took a shot at the 200-breaststroke where she was 10th in 2:28.61.
When it came time for the relay events she led off the 800-freestyle and the Cardinals were third in 7:48.35. Swimming third in the 400-medley relay she and her mates were sixth in 3:55.77. Finally, she anchored a UIW foursome to fifth in the 400-freestyle with a time of 3:35.24.
Kyselova is a freshman from Kiev, Ukraine. She will be a candidate for female athlete of the year in May when UIW coaches and athletic administrators vote on that award.
