University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

BRENDAN SCHAFFER
 
There were two meets in California during the time December 29 to January 1 for the UIW swimmers and divers.  Competing against strong Division I competition the Cardinals produced one first place and that came in the 3-meter diving event by Brendan Schaffer.
 
He is the UIW male athlete of the week for the first time and that will put him on the ballot next spring when voting for male athlete of the year is conducted among Incarnate Word coaches and athletic administrators.
 
Over the course of the two meets Schaffer entered four events, twice in the 1-meter dive and twice in the 3-meter.
 
At the San Diego State meet he started off with a second place finish in the 1-meter with 245.70 points which were but a narrow 9.5 points behind the winner.  Then came the only gold won by the Cardinals in the week.
 
He compiled 277.25 points in the 3-meter and that eclipsed all the other divers entered.
 
Moving on to the meet hosted by California-San Diego, Schaffer again entered both dives.  He started with a fourth place in the 1-meter with 246.30 points before moving up to second in the 3-meter with his 239.40 points.
 
Schaffer is a freshman from Charlotte, N.C.  There he graduated from South Mecklenburg High School.
