GENO ENCINA
 
Geno Encina has settled into a pattern and that is most always good for a baseball pitcher.  He is the Incarnate Word male athlete of the week for April 28 through May 4.
 
Over the last five weeks he has been the honored male three times in a pattern of every other week.  All totaled he has been selected tops four times.  He definitely will be on the ballot for male athlete of the week as selected by UIW coaches and athletic administrators.
 
Each of the last three times he has been honored his has thrown a complete game for a victory.  This past week he went all nine innings for a 3-2 win over Northwestern State of Louisiana.  Only one of those two runs was earned as he scattered five hits, all singles.  He walked three against two strikeouts. 
 
He threw a total of 118 pitches including 75 strikes.  He got 12 outs on fly balls and another 10 on ground balls.  He induced one Cardinals double play and he picked one runner off first base.
 
With two starts remaining he leads the team in wins, earned run average, innings pitched complete games, and strikeouts.
 
Encina is a sophomore righthander from San Antonio’s Brandeis High School.  His major at UIW is journalism.
