University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

GENO ENCINA
 
Geno Encina did it again.  And for the second time in three weeks and the third time this spring he is the Incarnate Word male athlete of the week for April 14 to April 20.
 
He was the first pitcher up for UIW in the three-game Southland Conference baseball series against Nicholls State.  He went the distance, going the full nine innings in a 6-2 Cardinals victory.  He allowed five hits while walking but a single batter and striking out seven.  The win got his season mark to 5-5.
 
What else he did again was pitch UIW to a victory following a loss in the previous game.  All five of his wins this spring have done the same thing, halt a losing string.
 
In going the distance for the second time this year he threw 118 pitches.  He has been in 10 games and all of them have been as a starter.  In addition to his two nine-inning outings two other times he has gone eight innings and twice he has worked through seven frames.
 
Encina is sophomore journalism major.  He is from San Antonio’s Brandeis High School.  And he will be on the ballot at year’s end when UIW coaches and athletic administrators name a male athlete of the year.
