EDUARDO ALEXANDER
Eduardo Alexander just this year took up the men’s manly event in track and field and at the UIW Invitational he set an Incarnate Word record to be named UIW male athlete of the week for April 7 to April 13.
Alexander finished fifth in the decathlon as he posted a cumulative 5,887 points in the 10-event grind spread over two days. That topped the previous mark of 5,802 points set just two weeks earlier by teammate Ryan Haese.
On day one, in the very first event, Alexander and Cardinals fans got a sense it was to be an historical time. In the 100-meter dash he crossed in 11.2 for 817 points. Those were to be his highest point total in a single event and it gave him a flying start.
In fact running proved to be his strong suit. The decathlon includes four running events. After the 100 and three events later, he posted a 51.96 in the 400-meters for 726 points and in the next event, the 110-meter hurdles, he gathered in 746 points with a time of 15.88. The fourth event on the track was the last of 10 and was the 400-meters. He totaled 469 points with a time of 5:16.43.
His best of three throwing events was the discus where his 30.17 meters gave him 468 points. In the three jumping events his highest point total of 688 came on a 4.25-meter effort in the pole vault.
Alexander is junior from Austin’s Bowie High School. He is studying engineering at UIW. He will be on the ballot when Incarnate Word coaches and athletic administrators select a male athlete of the year.
