The Incarnate Word men's track and field team had a strong showing on the first day of the Texas Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas, posting a number of top five finishes and competitive results.
Anthony Zapata won the 1,500 meters run with a  time of 3:45.80.
Christian Castro-Cruz finished 6th in the event with a time of 3:49.62 and
Eric Pineda followed one spot behind with a time of 3:53.15.
Ethan Malesich won the 3,000 meter steeplechase, beating teammate
James Butler by over 10 seconds, with a time of 9:06.55. Butler finished in 9:16.62.
Kamron Loera gave the Cardinals three in the top five as he posted a time of 9:27.98.
UIW had a number of entries in the long jump and had athletes finish from 5th to 11th.
Tommaso Franze was fifth with a distance of 6.85 meters, followed by
Gabriel Grebet (6.73 meters),
Nicolai Nelson (6.68 meters),
Jake Grullon (6.65 meters),
Joshua Jackson (6.56 meters), and
Mika Funck (6.56 meters).
Jonah Ulbricht cleared 5.15 meters in pole vault to finish third.
Dreyton Bacon placed fourth in high jump by crossing 2.03 meters. And
Alex Brown took fifth in discus with a distance of 51.04 meters.
The Cardinals conclude the Texas Invitational tomorrow.
