Zapata Captures Southland Athlete of the Week Honor

FRISCO – Incarnate Word's Anthony Zapata has won this week's Southland Conference Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week award, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. This is Zapata's second honor of the season.

Zapata had a historic weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational, setting two massive PRs and two school records in his signature events, the 800 and 1500. He re-broke his 800m school record, becoming the first Cardinal to break the 1:50 barrier when he ran 1:48.66 to catapult himself to the top spot in the SLC and #40 in the NCAA West Regional Rankings. His new mark represents a nearly two-second PR.

The sophomore from San Antonio returned to the track 24 hours later to lower the 1500m school record by two seconds and set a five-second PR. His time of 3:43.84 places him third in the SLC (one of three men with a 3:43 season best) and 78th in the NCAA West Regional Rankings.

Zapata and the Cardinals return to action this weekend at the Michael Johnson Invitational hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas, on Friday and Saturday.
