Women’s Basketball Travels to Houston to Take on Rice

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team heads to Houston to take on Rice in the Tudor Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

How to Follow Along

UIW

  • The Red and Black are coming off a strong 2024-25 campaign, finishing 17-12 overall and 12-8 in Southland Conference play. UIW earned a first-round bye in the Southland Conference Tournament before defeating Northwestern State in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. The Cardinals' season continued with an at-large bid to the WNIT, where they faced UT Arlington.

  • UIW returns nine letterwinners, including five players who averaged over 18 minutes per game last season. Among the returners are the team's top two scorers — Jorja Elliott (10.0 ppg) and Brynn Lusby (8.8 ppg) — along with Raimi McCrary, who led the team with 179 rebounds in 2024-25.

  • Head Coach Jhasmin Player begins her first season at the helm after spending the past three years as Associate Head Coach at Oklahoma State University. She brings high-level experience as she leads the Cardinals into a challenging non-conference slate.

 Scouting the Owls

  • Three Owls earned preseason All-Conference honors with Dominique Ennis (First Team), Aniah Alexis (Second Team) and Victoria Flores (Second Team) all earning recognition. Rice was selected third in the American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.

  • Hailey Adams was one of 64 women's basketball athletes in the nation selected to be a Kay Yow Servant Leader Award winner, a prestigious award honoring student athletes who exemplify the values of leadership, selflessness, and service.

  • Shelley Pennington and Friends Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds enters her fifth year at the helm for Rice. Already the fastest coach to win a conference title in program history, the Owls are fresh off back-to-back appearances in the American Conference Championship game, claiming the title in 2024.
