Women's Basketball First Season Under Coach Player

SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team finished the 2025-26 season 13-17 overall and an even 11-11 in Southland Conference play.

Jhasmine Player took over as head coach for the Cardinals in 2025, the fourth coach in DI program history and just the ninth coach ever for UIW women's basketball.

These Cardinals would be battle tested early on in the season having to play the number four ranked Texas Longhorns, the number eight ranked TCU Horned Frogs, the Rice Owls, and Abilene Christian all on the road. Things weren't much easier in the nest as UIW hosted crosstown rival UTSA. However, Player and the Cards were able to pick up the first wins of the Player era over St. Thomas and St. Mary's University.

The challenges prepared the Cardinals for conference play where they came out firing all on cylinders, winning four of their first five and sitting near the top of the Southland Conference standings. This was no normal way to kick things off at UIW as it was the best start to conference play in the division I era of UIW women's basketball

2026 was filled with ups and downs but the regular season came to a close with 13 wins. This was the most wins by a first year head coach in UIW women's basketball history. The Cardinals were the sixth seed in the SLC Tournament and set for a first round matchup with the Nicholls Colonels who UIW defeated twice in the regular season.

Unfortunately the UIW wbb season came to a close after round one but the historic season set the Cardinals up for a great future under coach Player. You can stay up to date with all things UIW women's basketball at the UIW Athletics website.
