Women's Basketball Ends Season in SLC Championships

LAKE CHARLES, LA – The No. 6 seed University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team was eliminated from the Southland Conference Championships on Monday afternoon, falling 81-55 to seventh-seeded Nicholls State University inside Townsley Law Arena in the opening round of the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening quarter of play was a back-and-forth affair before Nicholls used a quick 7-0 spurt midway through the frame to build a 15-6 lead with just over three minutes left on the clock.
  • Incarnate Word closed the period with consecutive baskets from sophomore Brynne Lusby and senior Madison Cockrell to cut the deficit to five points after 10 minutes of action.
  • The Cardinals carried momentum over into the second period, cutting the Nicholls lead to 17-15 with 8:06 to play on a three-pointer from Cockrell.
  • The score was eventually tied 23-23 after another basket from Cockrell as senior Jorja Elliott gave UIW the lead with a three-pointer late in the quarter.
  • After the Colonels answered back with a three-pointer of their own, Cockrell buried one-of-two free throw attempts with three seconds remaining to give Incarnate Word a 27-26 halftime advantage.
  • Nicholls quickly took the lead with a layup to open the second half, building a double-digit lead of 50-39 with 1:45 to play in the third quarter.
  • The Colonels pulled away in the final 10 minutes, shooting 58.6 percent as a team in the second half to eliminate Incarnate Word from the postseason.
NOTES
  • Incarnate Word out rebounded Nichols 39-32 in the contest, including 10 boards on the offensive end of the floor.
  • Lusby led UIW with 22 points, making 8-of-11 shots from the floor and 6-of-7 attempts from the free throw line. The Frisco native also chipped in a team-high seven rebounds in 27 minutes of action.
  • Cockrell followed with 16 points of her own as well as four assists and three steals, while sophomore Gwendolyn McGrew chipped in six points and seven boards.
  • Incarnate Word finishes the 2025-26 season 13-17 overall with an 11-11 mark in Southland Conference play.
