LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word is set to play No. 5 Texas A&M – Commerce in the second round of the 2024 Southland Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, March 12 at 11 a.m.
UIW
- The Cardinals entered the tournament with a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed, finishing with an SLC record of 12-6.
- The 19 UIW wins on the season marked the most wins in a season in the Division I era, topping last year's record of 15.
- Two student-athletes received SLC All-Conference recognition with Nina De Leon Negron earning first team status and Aliyah Collins claiming a spot on the second team.
- Off the bench, Collins is the leading scorer with 12.4 points per game. De Leon Negron commands the floor with 11.3 ppg, 6.7 rebounds, 92 assists and 46 steals.
- On the offensive boards, the Cardinals are first in the conference with 13.4 per game, led by De Leon Negron and Destiny Terrell with 58 offensive boards apiece. Terrell is the leading rebounder with 7.2 per game for the Cardinals.
Texas A&M – Commerce
- The Lions moved onto the second round following a 65-57 victory over No. 8 Northwestern State on Monday morning.
- UIW is 2-0 over TAMUC this season with the most recent win on February 15 at the McDermott Center. The Cardinals defeated the Lions 72-61.
- Jordyn Newsome was named Newcomer of the Year after finishing ninth in scoring and had the seventh best 3-point percentage in the SLC.
- Mia Deck finished as the Lions' leading scorer and top 20 rebounder to earn herself a spot on the SLC All-Conference second team. Deck tallied 20 points and six rebounds against Northwestern State. Ahmya Boyce added 12 points, while Jordyn Beaty finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
