SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team is set to host UTSA, Tuesday, April 4. The Cardinals will then head to Thibodaux, Louisiana to take on Nicholls in a three-game series, beginning on Thursday, April 6, and ending on Saturday, April 8.
HOW TO FOLLOW
UIW
- Catcher Hernan Yanez has 35 hits, one home run, one triple, ten doubles, and 17 RBIs this season to lead the team, batting .347. Infielder Jimmy De Leon is another key player for the Cardinals, with 21 RBIs and 33 hits. De Leon has also accumulated four home runs, one triple, and six doubles so far this season.
- Micah Berens is 2-0 this season following Sunday afternoon's win against Southeastern Louisiana University. Berens has pitched 33.1 innings this season, holding a 3.51 ERA while allowing 31 hits and striking out 20 batters.
- In a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana University, the Cardinals won the series 2-1 to move into a two-way tie for first place in the Southland Conference rankings. In game one, the Cardinals lost 10-2. In game two, UIW won 5-2, and in game three, the Cardinals won 11-1.
Scouting the Roadrunners
- UTSA is 23-6 so far this season, coming off a series sweep against Western Kentucky. Earlier in the season, the Cardinals visited the Roadrunners and lost a close one, 2-1.
- After finishing 38-20 last season, the Roadrunners were picked to finish fifth in the C-USA Preseason Poll. Leyton Barry, Luke Malone, Daniel Shafer, and Simon Miller were named to the C-USA Preseason All-Conference Team.
- Antonio Valdez is batting .398 with 45 hits, 41 RBIs, and 33 runs scored. Simon Miller is 6-0 this season, striking out 45 batters while giving up two earned runs in 30.2 innings pitched.
Scouting the Colonels
- Nicholls is 17-13 so far this season, coming off a 2-1 series win against Lamar this past weekend.
- After finishing 26-25 last season, the Colonels were picked to finish sixth in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll. Edgar Alvarez, Parker Coddou, Xane Washington, and Tyler Theriot were named to the Southland Conference Preseason All-Conference Team.
- Edgar Alvarez is batting .341 with 42 hits, 22 RBIs, and 20 runs scored. Jacob Mayers is 4-1 this season, striking out 51 batters while giving up nine earned runs in 34 innings pitched.
