BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word dropped the final game of the weekend series 8-0 to conference rival Lamar University this afternoon on the road. The Cardinals dropped to 14-14 and 6-9 in the SLC, while Lamar improved to 17-11 and 10-5 in conference play.
Lamar wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first when it pushed four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 lead.
The other Cardinals added a run in the second off a lead-off home run, then tacked on another in the third on an RBI groundout, and in the fourth added a seventh run to go up, 7-0.
UIW in the top of the fifth looked to get something going as
Cole Tabor singled to right and
Drake Anderson was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt by
Enrico Carrion advanced both runners to put them in scoring position. Lamar, though, was able to end the UIW threat with back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.
Lamar added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to push its lead to, 9-0.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the top of the eighth when
Tony DeJesus walked with one down and
Christian Enriquez and
Tyler Garritano tallied back-to-back singles with two outs. Unfortunately, a pop-up to third ended the threat.
The Lamar pitching staff in the ninth closed the door to secure the win.
UIW, as a team, tallied four hits, four walks, and three hit batters.
Garritano led UIW at the plate, going 2-for-4, while Enriquez and Tabor each tallied hits. Tabor also registered a walk.
Newberry, DeJesus, and
Justin Rumfield recorded a walk each.
Starting pitcher
Hayden Capers took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season. He gave up seven runs (all earned) on five hits and four walks over three innings.
Relievers
Sam Pitts,
Rand Green, and
Tanner Crispin combined for no runs, three hits, a walk, and a strikeout in three innings of work.
UIW is back home on Tuesday, March 31, to close out the month when it hosts the University of Texas at San Antonio at 2:05 p.m.
