SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word split a conference doubleheader against visiting Southeastern University today at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals are now 16-16 and 7-11 in the SLC, while the Lions move to 19-13 and 10-5 in the conference.
UIW is back on the road on April 7, when it travels to Austin to face the University of Texas at 6:35 p.m.
Game 1: UIW 13, Southeastern 2 – 7 innings (Run-rule)
The Cardinals grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third, when
Preston Newberry lead-off with a double to left-center and then advanced to third on a flyout to deep left field. He later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by
Colin Cymbalista to go up 1-0 before the inning ended.
UIW in the bottom of the fourth plated four runs on four hits.
Tyler Garritano walked to open the inning and then scored when
Cole Tabor belted his tenth home run of the season to push the lead to, 3-0.
Following a flyout to right center,
Tony DeJesus singled to left and moved to second on an error by the left fielder.
Trent Rucker's single to left put runners on the corners, and then an RBI single by Newberry scored DeJesus to push the lead to 4-0 and second Rucker to third. Rucker later scored off
Jake Weaver's sacrifice fly to put the Cardinals up 5-0 before the inning ended.
The Lions in the fifth cut the lead to 5-2, but the Cardinals added a run in their half of the fifth and then scored seven in the sixth to take a 13-2 lead.
Headed to the top of the seventh, the Lions looked to extend the game, but reliever
Chase Blease set Southeastern down in order to secure the win.
Starter
Zac Colletti improved to 3-1 on the season after allowing two runs on five hits over four and two-thirds innings, while striking out five. Blease did not allow a runner to reach in the two and third innings of work
Newberry led all UIW hitters as he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored, a home run, and a double.
Tabor, Rucker, and
Drake Anderson each tallied two hits apiece. Tabor finished a team-high five RBIs, a triple, two runs scored, and a home run.
Rucker finished with a pair of runs scored, an RBI, and a double.
Game 2: UIW 11, Southeastern 13 – 11 innings.
UIW wasted no time getting on the board as it pushed five runs across in the bottom of the first to start game two. Newberry and Weaver tallied back-to-back singles to start. Following a strikeout, Cris Enriquez singled up the middle to score Newberry and send Weaver to third to put runners on the corners. Both runners executed a double steal, which allowed Weaver to score and make it 2-0. DeJesus kept the inning going with a single to put runners on the corners once again. Both runners later came around to score when Tabor doubled to push the lead to, 4-0. Tabor then moved to third on an error by the pitcher before scoring on an RBI groundout to make it 5-0 before the frame ended.
The Lions cut the lead to 5-2 as they pushed two runs across on three hits in the top of the second.
UIW got the two runs back in the bottom of the fifth when DeJesus doubled with one out, and Tabor tallied his eleventh home run of the season to push the lead to 7-2.
Southeastern added two runs in the sixth, five in the seventh, and one in the eighth to go up 10-7.
Down to their final six outs, the Cardinals started things off in the eighth with Anderson reaching on an error and then moving to second when Garritano was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a groundout. Anderson then scored when Newberry reached first on an error. Garritano moved to third on the play. The Cardinals loaded the bases when Weaver was plunked.
Colin Cymbalista drove in Garritano to make it 10-9 when he was hit by a pitch. Newberry and Weaver later touched home when Enriquez doubled to left center to put UIW back in front 11-10.
The Lions, down to their final out in the ninth, homered to tie the game at 11 and force extra innings.
Both teams went scoreless in the tenth, but the Lions pushed two runs across in the eleventh to take a 13-11 lead and hold on for the win.
Starting pitcher
Fawster Voytko allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings of work, while reliever
Matthew Foley took the loss (0-1) as he allowed two runs over an inning and a third.
Enriquez, DeJesus, and Tabor each tallied three hits. Tabor was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a home run, and a double.
Enriquez finished the game going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a double, and a run scored, while DeJesus was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a double.
