Cardinals Fall at No. 2 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word was run-ruled 16-4 on the road by No. 2 University of Texas this evening. The Cardinals have fallen to 16-17, while the Longhorns improve to 27-5 on the season.

The Longhorns wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first as they pushed two runs across, and then in the bottom of the second added another six to go up 8-0 after two innings.

UIW in the top of the third cut into the lead as it plated three runs. Tyler Garritano opened the frame with a walk and then advanced to third when Trent Rucker singled to center.  An error by the centerfielder allowed Garritano to score to make it 8-1 and send Rucker from first as Preston Newberry reached first on the play. Rucker touched home when Jake Weaver grounded out to the shortstop. Newberry took second on the play. Trailing 8-2 now, UIW's Christian Enriquez doubled to the gap in right center to score Newberry as the lead was cut to 8-3 before the inning ended.

Texas broke the game open in its half of the third as it pushed six runs across on three hits to go up 14-3. The Longhorns in the fourth added another run on a home run

.With two down in the top of the fifth, Tony DeJesus doubled to left and then came around to score on Enriquez's RBI single to make it, 15-4.

The Longhorns added a run in the sixth to take a 16-4 lead and would hold on to win by that score.

Starting pitcher Matthew Foley took the loss to drop to 0-2. He allowed two runs on a hit in an inning of work.

Enriquez and Garritano led all Cardinal hitters with two hits. Garritano went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.

Enriquez was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Rucker and DeJesus each tallied a hit.

UIW is on the road this weekend as it faces SLC foe McNeese State University for a three-game series that starts on Friday night at 6 p.m.
