SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word dropped the first game of the weekend conference series 9-3 to visiting Southeastern Louisiana University this afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals fall to 15-15 and 6-10 in the SLC, while the Lions improved to 18-12 and 9-4.
Southeastern took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first off a two-run home run, and then in the top of the second, the Lions added a run off a solo shot to push the lead to, 3-0.
The Lions continued to use the long ball in the top of the third when they belted a two-run home run and a solo home run to make it 6-0.
The long ball did not stop for Southeastern as it tallied a solo home run in both the fourth and fifth to take an 8-0 lead.
UIW broke through in the bottom of the fifth, and it started when
Trent Rucker singled up the middle. He then moved to second off
Preston Newberry's single through the left side. Following a pop-up to shallow right for the first out, both runners advanced 90 feet off an error by the SLU pitcher on a pickoff attempt. The Lions were able to get a second out before
Jake Weaver drove in both runs to cut the lead to 8-2 off a double before the inning ended.
Headed to the bottom of the eighth, with two down,
Tony DeJesus doubled down the left field line and later came around to score off of Cris Enriquez's RBI single to right field to cut the lead to, 8-3.
SLU in the top of the ninth tacked on its ninth run of the game on another home run to go up 9-3 before setting the Cardinals down in order in the bottom half.
UIW starting pitcher Emir Ecalada scattered seven hits over three innings, while giving up six runs. Reliever
Gus McKay went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out a team-high five.
The Cardinals tallied eight hits, with two of them being doubles.
Christian Enriquez led the team in hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.

Drake Anderson, Weaver, DeJesus, and Rucker each tallied a hit. Weaver's and DeJesus hits were both doubles. Weaver added a pair of RBIs.
UIW and Southeastern will be back in action tomorrow for game two of the series at Sullivan Field at 2 p.m.
