LAKE CHARLES, La. – After defeating Northwestern State University on Monday, March 6, the University of Texas A&M – Commerce will meet the Cardinals in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference Tournament on Tuesday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at the McNeese Legacy Center.
HOW TO FOLLOW
UIW
- The No. 4 Cardinals earned themselves a bye in the first round of the tournament and will play their first game against the Lions.
- UIW is on an impressive six-game win streak, the longest in Division I program history.
- Newcomer of the Year, All-Defensive Team, and Second-Team All-Conference honoree Nina De Leon Negron is leading the charge for the Cardinals. She's averaging 11.8 points per game to lead the team in points, assists (106), and steals (57).
- The Cardinals' recent success has been in part to several student-athletes scoring in double digits. Freshmen Aliyah Collins (7.4) and Jorja Elliott (6.8) have come up big for UIW down the stretch.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
- Texas A&M – Commerce entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and defeated No. 8 Northwestern State University in the opening round, 79-66, to advance to the quarterfinals.
- DesiRay Kernal had herself a game, putting up a monstrous 15 rebounds to go along with 27 points in 38 minutes played, going 10-for-13 from the free-throw line.
- Mia Deck also helped lift the Lions to victory with 14 second-half points.
