Women’s Basketball Hits the Road for Two-Game Stretch

SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team will head up state this week to Fort Worth then Lubbock, Texas. The Cardinals face two of the top Big XII teams, going against TCU on Tuesday (11/29) and Texas Tech on Sunday (12/2).  

THE LAST TIME THEY MET  

  • This is the second matchup between UIW and TCU. The Horned Frogs lead the series 2-0.  

  • Texas Tech holds a 3-0 series lead over the Cardinals.  

UIW  

  • The Cardinals sit in fourth place in the latest Southland Conference standings with a 2-2 record heading into the week. 

  • Defensively, UIW is ranked second in the Southland, holding their opponents to an average of 58 points a game.  

  • Nina De Leon Negron is leading the Cardinals in scoring, averaging 12.3 points while shooting 45 percent from the field.  

  • Leading rebounder, Destiny Terrell, has pulled down 25 rebounds this season, including eight offensive boards. Not to mention, she's averaging eight points a game. 

TCU  

  • The Horned Frogs are 2-3 on the season, coming off a tough loss against Sam Houston on Wednesday night (54-60).  

  • Four super seniors lead the purple and white. In recent games, at least three of the five starters have been graduate students.  

  • Only one student-athlete is averaging double digits for TCU. Tomi Taiwo, a senior who played at Iowa, is currently putting up 14 points a game with an average of three rebounds.  

  • Roxane Makolo is another player to watch. After five games she's scored over 40 points, shooting 36 percent from field goal range. The 5-foot-10 guard is known for applying heavy defensive pressure.  

TEXAS TECH 

  • The Lady Raiders have started on a hot streak, coming into Sunday's game with a 5-1 record. After going undefeated at the Las Vegas Invitational, Tech has tallied four straight wins. 

  • Freshman, Jasmine Shavers, has been a dominant player for the Lady Raiders. After putting up her first 20-point career performance against Mercer on Saturday, Shavers was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week.  

  • Three student-athletes for Tech are averaging double-digits. Bailey Maupin (14.8), Rhyle McKinney (14.3), and Bre' Amber Scott (12.8) are leading the scoring force. Maupin and McKinney are in the Top 10 of Big XII scoring statistics.
