Enlivened Cardinals hoping to carry recent momentum into matchup with McNeese

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team will look to grab its fifth win over the last seven games against McNeese at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the McDermott Center.

"The fellas are staying on the grind," Cardinals coach Carson Cunningham said. "Impressed with their moxie, their ability to win four of six, to keep growing. We face another mighty challenge in McNeese State at home Wednesday night. We're excited to compete, to strive to give something for our great band and fans to make noise about."

SERIES HISTORY

UIW (8-17, 5-9 SLC) trails McNeese (12-13, 7-7 SLC) in head-to-head matchups, 1-6.

CLUTCH COACHING
Cunningham and his staff have shown their ability to win close games in tough environments over the last month, coming away with four victories decided by three or fewer points, with two tough wins on the road and a big upset over the second-ranked team in the conference at home.

LARSSON'S LANE
Freshman forward Marcus Larsson threw down the game-winning dunk Saturday and sealed the victory with a last-second steal to cap off an impressive performance where he recorded six points, five rebounds, five assists (a new career high) and three steals.

GRITTY GUARDS
Sophomore guard Dwight Murray Jr. and freshman guard Keaston Willis each added 11 points in Saturday's win, with Murray Jr. pulling down a career-high eight rebounds.

SHOOTING THE APPLE
UIW put together one of its best shooting performances of the season against New Orleans, going 25-45 (55.6 percent) from the floor, 7-17 (41.2 percent) from three and 10-12 (83.3 percent) from the free-throw line.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
  • The Cowboys are 12-13 on the season and 7-7 in SLC play, currently looking to put an end to their four-game losing streak.
  • Averaging 80.6 points per game, McNeese leads the SLC in scoring offense and boasts the highest 3-point percentage in the league (40.9 percent) thanks in large part to Dru Kuxhausen, who leads the nation with 101 3-pointers made on an unprecedented 48.5 percent rate from beyond the arc.
  • The Cowboys also are the only team in the SLC shooting at least 50 percent from the floor.
  • McNeese also gets after it on the glass, ranking second in the conference in rebounding margin (+3.88).
  • Sha'markus Kennedy is averaging 18.5 points per game during SLC play to lead the Cowboys, while A.J. Lawson has contributed 17.1 points per game during league competition.
  • Kennedy also leads the conference in rebounding with 11.7 boards per game.
