Experienced SFA squad presents tough challenge for young Cardinals

NACAGDOCHES, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team concludes its quick two-game road trip with a visit to SFA, where it will take on the top offense in the SLC at 4:30 p.m. (CT) Saturday, January 18.

"This is a great test, to play SFA at their place," Cardinals coach Carson Cunningham said. "The Lumberjacks have been playing top-shelf ball in the Southland for many years now and of course had a signature win at Duke this year. They pressure the ball and play up the line big time. We are preparing hard and are excited to test ourselves with another road conference tilt."

The Cardinals (4-12, 1-4 SLC) are coming off a tough road loss at McNeese, while the Lumberjacks (14-3, 5-1 SLC) narrowly escaped defeat against Central Arkansas on Wednesday.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
  • The Lumberjacks have won seven of their last eight, hitting a speed bump in their last couple of games with a 73-72 home loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and narrowly edging out Central Arkansas, 77-76, on the road.
  • SFA boasts the conference's No. 1 scoring offense and No. 1 scoring margin, and is No. 1 in offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds and rebounding margin.
  • If the Lumberjacks have a weakness, it's their ability to shoot from and defend the three. SFA is ranked second-to-last in 3-point field goals made and second-to-last in 3-point field goal percentage defense. The team also ranks No. 9 in free-throw percentage.
  • Senior guard and preseason first-team all-conference Kevon Harris leads the team with 18.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Harris scored 26 points in SFA's upset over Duke.
