Cardinals host [24/25] Nicholls for Military Appreciation Game

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team closes out its three-game home stand against [24/25] Nicholls for the Frost Bank Military Appreciation Game on Saturday at 4 p.m. (CT) at Benson Stadium.

PROMOTIONS

  • The first 4,000 fans in attendance receive a free replica field turf towel.
  • There will be an enhanced UIW Fan Zone featuring representation from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Texas National Guard.
  • A field-sized American flag will be unfurled during the National Anthem by approximately 150 high school ROTC students.
  • The National Anthem will be sung by Petty Officer 1st Class Steven Comacho of Navy Recruiting District San Antonio.
  • Fans will compete against the UIW ROTC in the Average Joe's vs. G.I. Joe's promotion.
  • More than 100 high school students will be enlisted into the military at halftime.
  • All UIW spirit squad routines will be military themed.

  • The Colonels lead the series, 3-2, with a three-game winning streak against UIW.
  • The Cardinals have won one and lost one at Benson Stadium against Nicholls.
  • UIW and Nicholls shared the Southland Conference title for the 2018 season.
 
THE CARDINALS
  • UIW is receiving votes in both the FCS STATS poll and the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll.
  • The Cardinals have forced a turnover in 20 straight games.
  • UIW leads the nation (FCS and FBS) with 16 interceptions this season.
  • The Cardinals have posted a nation-best 25 turnovers gained, which is also a best for both FBS and FCS teams.
  • Sophomore quarterback Jon Copeland set the new program record of 39 career passing touchdowns with the two touchdown passes against Northwestern State.
  • Junior running back Kevin Brown had his third 100-yard rushing game this season, running for a career-high 116 yards against Northwestern State.
  • Senior running back Keyondrick Philio has scored eight rushing touchdowns this season, which is tied for 4th in single season rushing TDs in UIW history.
  • Senior linebacker Mar'kel Cooks recorded 13 tackles against the Demons. He ranks tied for fourth in program history in total tackles (228) and is fourth in assisted tackles (134) as well.
 
SCOUTING THE COLONELS
  • The Colonels were picked to finish first in the SLC preseason poll, racking up 20 first place votes.
  • Nicholls is coming off a two-game losing streak, first to Sam Houston State (17-0, Oct. 19) and then to Abilene Christian (37-31 OT, Oct. 26).
  • Nicholls boasts the second-best rushing offense in the league, averaging 181.6 yards per game and scoring 24 rushing touchdowns; however, when facing conference opponents, the Colonels lead the league with 18 rushing touchdowns and an average of 199.6 yards per game.
  • They are the third most efficient team in the league in red zone offense at 82.8 percent, scoring 24 out of 29 times when inside the 20-yard line.
