HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word football team ended the season with a road win over the Houston Christian Huskies, 31-10, on Saturday night. This is the 25
th win for Head Coach
Clint Killough, making him the winningest coach in UIW history.
Kobe Dillon led the way on the ground with 110 rush yards and
Jaylon Spears wasn't too far behind with 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Josh Lorick was the team's leading receiver with 68 yards but
Jalen Walthall and
Chedon James were the two receivers who found the endzone for the Cards this evening. On the defensive side of the ball
Dune Smith racked up 13 tackles, 2.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks.
With
Richard Torres back at QB the Cardinals marched down the field, going 63 yards in six plays as Spears rumbled across the goal line for the first score of the game. The UIW defense was standing tall not allowing HCU to move the ball until the Huskies hit on a 75-yard touchdown pass to even the game at seven. Torres responded finding
Chedon James flying down the field for a 50-yard touchdown catch. Houston Christian nearly tied the game on another deep ball to end the quarter but the play was called back.
Later on the same drive HCU went for it on fourth down but was stopped by the stout UIW defense. The Cardinals took over and were able to add three more from Will Farris taking a 17-7 lead.
The score remained the same well into the third quarter. Once again the Cardinals went on a long methodical drive down the field which went eight plays for 83 yards and another Spears touchdown. HCU found a way to score one more time cutting the deficit to just 14, 24-10.
However, midway through the fourth
Jalen Walthall put the nail in the coffin making his final collegiate catch in the back of the endzone, putting UIW up 31-10.
The Cardinals wouldn't allow the Huskies to cross the 50 in the final minutes of the game and finished the season with a 31-10 victory.
